Kajal is a thick, black makeup product, traditionally used to make the eyes pop in Middle Eastern and South Asian countries. Applying kajal may seem intimidating at first, but it’s actually an easy-to-use eyeliner. You can use a pencil to draw a thin, neat line along your eyes or use a brush or applicator to achieve a thicker, smokier line. Once you have mastered the technique, try different styles to impress those around you.
To master the line, choose a kajal pencil. Kajal pencils are the easiest to use, especially for beginners. They apply like regular eyeliner pencils. They allow you to obtain fine, precise lines and they do not run easily. However, they are not ideal for achieving a smoky or ombre look [1] .
A pencil will be a very good choice if you want to darken the mucous membrane between your eyelashes and your eye.
You will need to sharpen your pencil from time to time.
For a more pronounced look, choose a liquid or gel kajal. Liquid or gel kajals allow you to achieve the darkest and most intense looks. They are easier to blend than pencil kajals, but they tend to smudge more throughout the day. Furthermore, it is not recommended to apply liquid or gel kajal directly to the mucous membrane, as the product could cause irritation [2] .
Some liquid or gel kajals will be sold with their own applicator. Otherwise, you will need to purchase an eyeliner brush to apply the product.
For a traditional look, choose a powdered kajal. If you’re looking to achieve a smoky look, you could use a traditional powdered kajal. These powders will be ideal for achieving dark, traditional eye makeup. They will not give you straight, clean lines, but will allow you to achieve intense, dark makeup [3] .

If you want, blend the product. For many looks, you will need to blend the kajal after applying it. Using your ring finger or a brush, gently blend the kajal upwards, towards your eyebrows, in repeated short strokes [7] .
Eliminate excess product. Whether you are working with a powder, liquid or gel, make sure there is no kajal left on the applicator or brush. For powder, gently tap the applicator against the bottle. For liquid or gel product, gently wipe the brush on the lid.
